六、 課程概述:
(Course Description)
The purpose of the course is to introduce students how to approach the different genres of literary works with various reading skills and prerequisite knowledge. The intent of instruction is that students will be able to (1) identify the recurrent themes in literary works, be it as poetry, fiction, drama, or prose, (2) connect those themes with the contemporary society and events, (3) read from the assigned texts or extracts to gain an overview of literary works, and (4) evaluate different works in terms of personal enjoyment or terms of artistic merit and lasting importance.
七、 課程目標:
(Course Objectives)
This introductory course aims to help cultivate students’ literary taste and sensibility to the nuance of language use by getting them to read masterpieces of fiction, poetry and drama (in this order). Differences of literary genres and different aspects of literature such as theme, character, point of view, narrative technique, symbol, setting and the like will be explored. One reading note of 3-4 pages dealing with various issues of literature are required, in addition to a mid-term and a final exam.
